Vathek, conte arabe est un conte orientaliste écrit en langue française par l’écrivain anglais William Beckford en 1782.

Vathek a été publié à Lausanne dans sa langue originelle en décembre 1786 après avoir paru en début d'année en Angleterre dans une traduction anglaise de Samuel Henley. Beckford a déclaré avoir produit cette œuvre de jeunesse emblématique du roman gothique, qui a compté Byron parmi ses plus fervents admirateurs, en trois jours et deux nuits d’affilée, après quelques jours d'orgie, sans même avoir pris la peine de se déshabiller et qu’il était tombé malade à son achèvement.

Thème

Version romancée de la vie du calife Al-Wathiq, Vathek est la chronique de la chute d’un calife qui abjure l’islam pour s’engager, avec son allié Nouronihar, dans une suite d’activités licencieuses et déplorables destinées à lui acquérir des pouvoirs surnaturels. Au lieu d’accéder à ces pouvoirs, Vathek descend, à la fin du récit, dans l’enfer gouverné par le démon Eblis où il est condamné à errer sans fin et sans voix.
