United Press International

United Press International (UPI ou United Press) est une agence de presse américaine.

Elle a été, avec Associated Press, Reuters et l'Agence France-Presse, une des quatre principales agences de presse au monde avant de décliner dans les années 1990.

Histoire

La société a été créée en 1907, sous le nom de United Press Associations, par l'éditeur Edward Willis Scripps, qui positionna sa compagnie comme une alternative à la tout puissante Associated Press. En 1959, United Press fusionna avec l'agence International News Service, qui avait été créé en 1909 par l'éditeur William Randolph Hearst. Le nouveau groupe fut alors baptisé United Press International.

Dans les années 1980 et 1990, UPI a beaucoup souffert des changements qu'a subis la presse américaine et en particulier de la cessation d'activité de nombreux journaux du soir. Après avoir connu 7 propriétaires différents de 1992 à 2000, UPI a été rachetée par News World Communications, le groupe de presse qui possède le Washington Times. Helen Thomas, la plus célèbre des reporters de l'agence, démissionna suite à ce rachat, dénonçant les liens entre le Times et l'Église de l'Unification.

Les salariés et pigistes de UPI sont surnommés les Unipressers.
