Twist final

Un twist final (ou Twist ending[1]) correspond à une fin inattendue dans une œuvre de fiction, le plus souvent un film, qui amène le spectateur à voir l'histoire sous un angle différent et le pousse vers une nouvelle interprétation de l'ensemble. L'intérêt étant que le spectateur ne s'y attende pas et se retrouve estomaqué lors de la révélation, bien que parfois, le réalisateur parsème des indices tout au long du film. Ce procédé scénaristique peut s'apparenter au Coup de théâtre, Deus ex machina, chutes et autres principes littéraires.

Le Twist final peut ainsi être le fruit d'une narration tronquée, dont un exemple littéraire pourrait être Le Meurtre de Roger Ackroyd. L'un des premiers films à utiliser cette technique est Le Grand Alibi, polar d'Alfred Hitchcock narrant les suites d'un meurtre retracé dans un flashback qui s'avèrera mensonger. La révélation du véritable déroulement de la scène du meurtre constitue ainsi le twist final. Paradoxalement, ce faux flashback, qui fut en son temps décrié comme une erreur de réalisation, est maintenant couramment utilisé dans des films tel que Usual Suspects.

L'utilisation du twist se fait assez rare dans l'histoire du cinéma. Seulement depuis la décennie 90, ce style narratif abonde, ce qui va de pair avec la réception enthousiaste du public. On citera entre autres Christopher Nolan (Memento, Le Prestige) et M. Night Shyamalan qui en a fait sa spécialité, notamment au travers de son premier film, Sixième Sens.
