Azimut
L’azimut est l'angle horizontal entre la direction d'un objet et une direction de référence. Le terme est issu de l'espagnol acimut, lui-même issu de l'arabe qui signifie les directions.
Cette référence est le nord géographique. L'azimut est mesuré depuis le nord en degré de 000° à 359° dans le sens rétrograde (sens des aiguilles d'une montre) : ainsi l’est est au 90°, le sud au 180° et l’ouest au 270°.
En navigation, l'azimut d'un objet se mesure à l'aide d'un compas de relèvement. Cette mesure est l'azimut compas (Zc) ; l'azimut vrai s'en déduit en apportant les corrections (variation, déviation, déclinaison) dues au compas utilisé :
- Zv = Zc + W
- W est la variation du compas ;
- si il s'agit d'un compas gyroscopique, en général W = 0 ;
- dans le cas d'un compas magnétique W = D + δ : somme de la déclinaison magnétique et de la déviation propre au compas.
En astronomie, dans le système de coordonnées horizontales (système local), la direction d'un objet céleste peut être donnée par son azimut, angle horizontal mesuré depuis le nord géographique dans le sens des aiguilles d'une montre, et sa hauteur. En astronomie on compte l'azimut à partir du sud: l'avantage est qu'au moment de son passage au méridien l'azimut et l'angle horaire d'un astre sont tous deux nuls. En géodésie, on le compte à partir du nord.
