Tongatapu est la plus grande[1] des 150 îles du royaume de Tonga, qui constituent un archipel du Pacifique. Quand l'océan se déchaîne au sud de Tongatapu, sur la côte déchiquetée, de grandes gerbes d'eau jaillissent comme de véritables geysers des trous creusés dans les écueils. Le climat n'est pas toujours serein et les pluies tropicales qui s'abattent en averses torrentielles sur les îles entraînent souvent des inondations.
On y trouve entre autres les villes de Nuku'alofa (capitale actuelle) et de Mu'a (ancienne capitale).
