Synopsis

Dans les Caraïbes, au siècle dernier, Manuela (Judy Garland) s'ennuie et ne supporte pas de devoir se marier avec le Maire de la ville et rêve du fameux pirate imaginaire Macoco. Un saltimbanque (Gene Kelly), pour la séduire, décide de se faire passer pour le fameux pirate. Il est jeté en prison et condamné à mort...

Sur une musique de Cole Porter, aidé par Gene Kelly (qui co-chorégraphie les numéros musicaux), Vincente Minnelli réalise une vision romantique et colorée du monde des pirates et d'une île des Caraïbes au XIXe siècle. Le film se termine en apothéose avec le duo, chanté et dansé par Gene Kelly et Judy Garland, Be A Clown!.
