The Busters, appelé aussi The Northern Lights, est un goupe de rock formé en 1957 à Greenfield, Massachusetts, États-Unis, connu pour leur titre « BUST OUT ».

Histoire du groupe

Au printemps de 1957, John Kawecki, John Kozik et Don Gates se rencontrent à la Greenfield High School et fondent les Midnight Rockers.

Ils répètent ensembles, puis durant l'hivers 1958, après l'arrivée d'Alan Orkins font leur première scène entre deux films (Don't Knock The Rock et Loving You avec Elvis Presley) au Théâtre Victoria de Greenfield sous le nom de The Sapphires. Lors de cette performance, où le bassiste John Kozik porte un masque de Frankenstein, la salle se leve pour danser et le spectacle finit sous les acclamations du public.

Grâce au sens des affaires de Don Gates, ils organisent un concert au E & N Rolardrome de Brattleboro le Jeudi 21 mai 1958, en vu de lever des fonts.

Ils jouent en suite avec succès dans divers salles du Connecticut et du Massachusetts, notamment au Ritz Pleasure Beach Amusement Park à Bridgeport en compagnie de Fabian et The Fabulous Thunderbirds durant l'été 1958. Bien que remarqué, leur show y provoqua une bagarre général.

A l'automne 1958, grâce au financement de son père, Don Gates organise une session d'enregistrement au studio Bell Sound de New York.

Au cours de l'année 1959, ils continuent de faire quelques dates et Orkins Alan est remplacé par John Chappel, un vétéran de la scène country. Ils prennent le nom de The Northen Lights.

Ayant complété leur répertoire de nouvelles chansons originales, ils repartent pour une nouvelle session d'enregistrement à New York. Ils enregistrent quatre titres dont « Typhoid » qui deviendra plus tard « Bust out ».

Fin de 1959, John Kosic, John Kowecki et Don Gates Jr, quitte le groupe pour se consacrer à leurs activité professionnelles.

Au printemps 1960, Jack Baker reforme les Northern Lights avec Alan Orkins, John Chappel, Freddie Cole, Fran Parda et Al Marczyk. Ils enregistrent à New York l'album « College Hop » comprenant une nouvelle version de « Typhoid » puis encore une autre version au studios Bell. C'est là qu'un employé parle de ce morceau à Harry Finder ex associé de Dick Clark, patron des labels Arlen et Jamie.

« Typhoid » est publié à leur insu en 1963 sous le titre « Bust Out » au nom de The Busters, crédité du nom imaginaire de Dave Benjamin avec le titre «Astronaut’s » pour la face B.

Diverses stations de radios soutiennent alors le titre qui obtient sont entrée à la 25e place du billboard en août 1963. Découvrant son morceau à la radio sous un nouveau nom, Jack Baker poursuit Harry Finder avec qui il finit par trouver un arrangement. Puis il monte le groupe The Busters et organise une tournée.

Le groupe se produit dans l'American Bandstand de Dick Clark. Les Busters tournent avec Dion et Roy Orbison. En 1964, ils enregistrent l'album « All American Surfer » puis un troisième 45 tours « Arlen » qui n'obtiennent aucun succès.

Les Busters resteront à jamais dans l’histoire pour le seul titre « Bust Out », recensement réédité sur le label Born Bad (Vol.3).
