Le Moine (The Monk) est un roman anglais de l'écrivain Matthew Gregory Lewis, publié en 1796. Cette œuvre de jeunesse, emblématique du roman gothique, aura une influence considérable et inspirera de nombreux imitateurs.

Mathew Gregory Lewis a écrit ce roman en 10 mois dans le but de divertir sa mère. Il peut paraitre très subversif dans les thèmes abordés (viol, inceste, matricide, magie noire...) ou dans l'attitude de certains personnages (Elvira découpant certains passages de la Bible pour "protéger" sa fille Antonia ou le moine vendant son âme au diable). C'est pour cela que le roman fut censuré à son époque.

Néanmoins, la morale reste ancrée dans les us et coutumes de la société. Antonia et Ambrosio sont voués dès le départ à une mort certaine car ils sont les enfants d'un mauvais mariage (un noble avec une roturière). Dans ce sens, Le Moine véhicule les peurs aristocratiques de l'effondrement de l'ordre hiérarchique social. De plus, si Béatrice et Agnès sont enfermées dans un caveau et doivent être confrontées à la mort (la leur ou celle de leur descendance) c'est parce qu'elles ont failli à leur devoir, rompant leurs voeux religieux pour des amours impurs. Ainsi, la raison doit soumettre la passion. Le Moine peut donc être vu comme un roman conventionnel.

En France, en 1931, Antonin Artaud en publie une traduction très personnelle (Le moine, de Lewis, raconté par Antonin Artaud) et envisage de l'adapter au cinéma.

Le livre est porté à l'écran en 1972 par Ado Kyrou, scénarisé par Luis Buñuel et Jean-Claude Carrière.
