Historique
L'album est orienté rock, mèlant une pop des années 1980 avec des improvisations funk et fusion. Il signe le retour de Miles Davis après une éclipse de six années. Les derniers enregistrements dataient de 1975, les live Agharta et Pangaea. Le dernier album studio de 1972, On the Corner.
The Man with the Horn est plus accessible et moins expérimental que les albums précédents, plus funk, pop, voire rock. Miles Davis semble influencé par l'air du temps et les musiciens en vogue, en particulier Prince[1].
Mike Stern sur Fat Time et Barry Finnerty sur Back Seat Betty interprètent des solos de guitare quasi hard rock.
"Shout" est une relecture à peine déguisée de "Shaft" de Isaac Hayes (1971)[2].
Aida, Ursula et Back Seat Betty sont dédiés à trois amies de Miles dont Betty Mabry[3].
Le public découvre le bassiste Marcus Miller qui annonce l'après "Jaco"[4] et jouera un rôle de premier plan dans la suite de la carrière de Miles Davis.
