The Four Tops

The Four Tops est un quartet de Motown américain dont le répertoire était principalement composé des styles doo-wop, jazz, musique soul, R&B, et disco.

Ce groupe, originaire de Détroit, était composé à la base des membres Levi Stubbs (un cousin du chanteur Jackie Wilson), de Abdul « Duke » Fakir, Renaldo « Obie » Benson, et de Lawrence Payton. La formation originale a perduré plus de quarante ans (de 1953 à 1997), le premier changement de membre faisant suite au décès de Lawrence Payton le 20 juin 1997. Au fil des années suivantes, les membres quitteront successivement le groupe, puis seront par la suite remplacés par d'autres connaissances.

Parmi leurs plus grands titres, figurent I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch) et Reach Out I'll Be There (titre d'ailleurs adapté par la suite en français, J'attendrai par le chanteur Claude François). En 1972, les Four Tops quitteront Motown et signeront chez ABC Records. Ils continueront par ailleurs d'enregistrer des tubes dans les années 1980 sous divers labels.

En 1990, le groupe fera son entrée dans le fameux musée Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, puis dans le Vocal Group Hall of Fame en 1999. En 2004, le magazine Rolling Stone Magazine les sélectionnera à la place no79 dans le classement des cent plus grands artistes de tous les temps.

Renaldo « Obie » Benson est décédé le 1er juillet 2005 d'un cancer du poumon, et le chanteur Levi Stubbs est décédé le 17 octobre 2008 à l’âge de 72 ans à Détroit. Abdul « Duke » Fakir reste aujourd'hui le dernier membre de la formation originale du groupe.
