Stephen Charnock (1628 - 1680) fut un ministre du culte puritain, né à St Katherine Cree, paroisse de Londres.

Vie

Charnock étudia à l'Emmanuel College à Cambridge,[1] où il se convertit à la foi chrétienne. Après avoir quitté le collège, il aurait pu devenir un professeur particulier, mais il décida de devenir ministre de la foi à Southwark pour une courte période et convertit des individus au christianisme. Il continua à New College à Oxford,où il obtint un poste d'attaché d'enseignement et atteint la position de délégué supérieur.

Il partit pour l'Irlande en 1656 où il devint l'aumônier d' Henry Cromwell, gouverneur de l'Irlande. A Dublin, il commença un ministère régulier de prédicateur auprès d'autres croyants. Ceux qui venaient l'écouter était de différentes classes sociales et de différentes dénominations, et il fut largement connu pour son habilité.

En 1660, la monarchie fut restauré en Angleterre, et Charles II d'Angleterre accéda aux trônes d'Angleterre, d'Écosse et d'Irlande. À cause de nouvelles restrictions, Charnock ne pouvait plus exercer le ministère publique en Irlande, et en Angleterre où il retourna. Malgré tout il continua à étudier et à exercer son ministère secrètement.

Charnock devint pasteur associé à Crosby Hall à Londres en 1675; ce fut sa dernière place connue en tant que ministre du culte avant sa mort en 1680.

Ouvrages

Parmi tous ses ouvrages qui furent pratiquement retranscrit après sa mort, un de ces plus fameux ouvrages qu'il prêcha à Crosby Hall et qui est encore préservé aujourd'hui est "L'existence et les attributs de Dieu" (The Existence and Attributes of God).
