Le terme stencil, qui signifie pochoir en anglais, prend différents sens selon le contexte.

  • En imprimerie, le stencil est un élément de certaines techniques de reproduction, comme la ronéotypie ou le cyclostyle.

Selon la technique, le stencil définit différents éléments. A l'origine, l'utilisation du mot stencil est un anglicisme pour définir un pochoir, c'est-à-dire une feuille imperméable (papier paraffiné ou feuille de celluloïd), perforée afin de laisser passer l'encre. C'est par exemple le cas pour la reproduction par cyclostyle et la miméographie. Par la suite, le terme stencil fut usité pour définir de manière générale une feuille intermédiaire permettant la reproduction de documents. C'est le cas par exemple pour la duplication à l'alcool, où le stencil est une feuille paraffinée qui reçoit un dépôt d'encre provenant d'un papier carbone.

  • En infographie, on désigne par stencil un élément (2D ou 3D selon le contexte) qui a pour but d'être reproduit.
