Titre
Sri ou Shri (devanāgarī : श्री, sanskrit : Śrī) est un titre de vénération donné aux dieux hindous, provenant du sanskrit, il avait à la base une signification d'émanence, de radiance, de diffusion lumineuse. Dans un sens honorifique, ce titre est donné aux sages et aux gourous, auquel cas il est parfois redoublé en Sri Sri. Il peut également être utilisé comme épithète d'un objet honoré, sacré (cf. infra). Dans l'Inde moderne, Sri est utilisé dans le sens de « Monsieur ». Son équivalent féminin est Shrimati. Sri étant l'épithète de certains dieux hindous, on peut le traduire également par "Seigneur".
Toponymie
Dans un sens laudatif souvent traduit par « vénérable », « prospère », « saint », « brillant » etc, Sri peut être accolé au nom d'États ou de villes, comme dans Sri Lanka, Sri Ksetra, Sriwijaya, Srinagar etc.
