Elle porte le nom de Felix Slade (en) (1788 - 1868), philanthrope, mécène et collectionneur anglais qui créa la chaire Slade pour l'enseignement des beaux-arts. En 2010, son directeur est John Aiken.
Enseignement
La Slade School of Fine Art s'intéresse principalement aux pratiques contemporaines de l'art. L'enseignement se polarise autour de la pratique, les étudiants étant invités à contribuer par leurs recherches et leurs expérimentations à la réflexion artistique actuelle. Lors de l'évaluation RAE 2008 (Research Assessment Exercise, évaluation transdisciplinaire de départements de recherches anglo-saxons), 70% de la production de l'école a été reconnue comme "world leading" (première catégorie) ou comme "internationally excellent" (deuxième catégorie)[1].
Prix d’art contemporain
Le Prix Ariane de Rothschild, prix d’art contemporain attribué chaque année à un artiste peintre, n’offre pas de récompenses pécuniaires, mais une formation de six mois, tous frais payés, à la Slade School of Fine Art. Parmi les lauréats : Mekhitar Garabedian, Susana Mendes Silva, Manuel Caeiro.
