Shorten (qui signifie « raccourcir » en anglais) est un format de fichier audio sans perte, de qualité CD (44,1 kHz 16-bit stéréo PCM). Il est similaire aux formats ZIP ou RAR, mais conçu pour l'audio puisque les compressions tradionnelles ne sont généralement pas efficace sur des données audio. La compression est beaucoup moins efficace que celles qu'offrent les formats Ogg Vorbis ou MP3 (10% de la taille PCM original contrairement à 50 à 70% pour les deux derniers, qui a la différence du SHN provoquent des pertes de données). Les codecs tel que TTA ou FLAC sont d'autres codecs audio sans perte plus populaires que le format .SHN.
L'algorithme et son code de source ont été implémentés et developpés par Tony Robinson de l'université de Cambridge en 1992/1993 et plus tard à la SoftSound Ltd. Le code a été rendu public sous une licence non-commerciale et a été amélioré par Wayne Stielau pour inclure une table des pistes pour pouvoir naviguer plus aisément dans le fichier.
