Chanyu

Chanyu ou Shanyu (en chinois 單于/单于, hanyu pinyin chányú) était le titre traditionnel des chefs xiongnu (匈奴) sous la dynastie Han. La traduction littérale est peut-être quelque chose comme « le plus grand », grossièrement équivalent au chinois « fils du ciel » car ce qui reste du langage xiongnu n’est connu que très partiellement par les historiens chinois. Comme dans la plupart des peuples nomades, le titre était héréditaire en théorie.
