Les Sélaginelles (genre Selaginella) sont réduites aujourd'hui à ce seul genre appartenant à la famille des Sélaginellacées. Le genre Selaginella compte actuellement environ 700 espèces.

Étymologie

Le mot Selaginella est le diminutif de Selago qui est le nom donné par Pline à certains Conifères puis ensuite repris pour désigner les Lycopodes. Autrefois, les Sélaginelles étaient décrites comme des petits Lycopodes.
