Roger Brooke Taney
Roger Brooke Taney naît dans le comté de Calvert dans le Maryland le 17 mars 1777 est un homme politique et haut fonctionnaire américain.
Après avoir travaillé comme avocat, il est promu juge en chef de son État natal en 1827. Quatre ans plus tard, il devient Attorney General des États-Unis et en 1833, il sert en tant que Secrétaire au Trésor dans le cabinet du président Andrew Jackson et joue un rôle de premier plan dans la lutte contre la Second Bank of the United States. En 1836, le président Jackson le nomme Chief Justice des États-Unis, à la suite de la mort de John Marshall. Taney acquerra une notoriété pour son appui aux lois sur la reddition des esclaves fugitifs dans les États libres, malgré ses positions anti-esclavagistes.
Il meurt à Washington, le 12 octobre 1864.
