R. U. R. (Rossum's Universal Robots) est une pièce de théâtre de science-fiction, écrite en 1920 par Karel Čapek (Tchécoslovaquie), mise en scène à Prague en 1921 et jouée à New York en 1922. C'est dans cette pièce que l'auteur utilisa le mot robot pour la première fois, bien que ce soit son frère Josef qui l'ait inventé. Robot supplanta immédiatement le terme automaton utilisé par l'auteur dans la courte pièce Opilec de 1917.
La première traduction française de cette pièce, établie par Hanuš Jelínek, était intitulée Rezon's Universal Robots. La pièce fut créée à la Comédie des Champs-Élysées le 26 mars 1924, direction Jacques Hébertot, avec MM. Ben Danou, Jean-Hort, Fabert et Héraut.
