Le balayage progressif (progressive scan) est le mode d'affichage utilisé par les écrans ayant une grande fréquence de rafraîchissement : écran d'ordinateur moderne, télévision à haute définition. Sur l'écran, l'image arrive de manière non entrelacée. Chaque trame correspond donc à une image entière, ce qui n'est pas le cas d'un signal de télévision analogique standard (sd-tv), où l'image est constituée de deux trames.
Le balayage progressif est le mode de balayage privilégié des écrans CRT d'ordinateurs. Son usage s'est également répandu dans le monde de la télévision avec l'avènement de la télévision haute définition, capable de désentrelacer les images.
Ce système était nommé « balayage séquentiel » (sequential scanning) en 1936 lorsqu'il était utilisé dans les transmissions télévisuelles Baird 240 d'Alexandra Palace en Angleterre. Le procédé fut également utilisé lors des transmissions expérimentales de 30 lignes de Baird.
L'abréviation p est utilisée pour désigner ce balayage (exemple : 480p, 720p) ; l'abréviation inverse est i (exemple : 1080i).
