Preservation Act 1 est le premier opus du concept-album Preservation enregistré par les Kinks entre 1973 et 1974. Ce qui n'aurait dû être qu'un double-album est finalement devenu une œuvre en deux parties (un album simple 33T, puis un double album 33 T), la première consistant en une sorte de prologue de la seconde, présentant le cadre (le Village Vert) et les personnages (Mr Flash, Mr Black, Lady Genevieve, Johnny Thunders...). Reçu froidement par la critique et le public de l'époque, ce premier acte de comédie musicale rock a depuis été reconsidéré et gagné quelques sympathisants.
