Les Powhatans sont une confédération de tribus amérindiennes d’Amérique du Nord parlant l’algonquin ayant vécu dans l’actuelle Virginie. Elle aurait eu ses premiers rapports continus avec des européens puisque que c'est là que fut installée la première colonie permanente d’Angleterre : Jamestown. Suite à des révoltes, la confédération fut dispersée en 1644. Cependant, des descendants des tribus ayant fait partie de cette confédération existent toujours en Virginie : les Pamunkey, Mattaponi et Chickahominy. Leur langue n’est plus parlée depuis le XIXe siècle. Ils sont reconnus comme indiens au niveau fédéral et seraient à l’heure actuelle (2006) plus de trois mille.

La tribu fut dirigée par Powhatan puis Opchanacanough.

Pocahontas serait issue de cette tribu.
