Ostracisme vient du grec ἐξοστρακίζω, « bannir par ostracisme ») (de ὄστρεον, originellement la coquille d'huître, puis le tesson et du latin ismus « -isme », correspondant à la notion de système dans la composition d'un mot).
- Dans la Grèce antique, l'ostracisme est le bannissement d'un individu de la cité par décision de l'ecclésia (l'assemblée publique).
- En sociologie, l'ostracisme est une forme d'exclusion sociale qui survient à l'occasion dans certains groupes sociaux.
