Dans l'industrie du cinéma, et particulièrement pour les effets visuels, on a recours a des systèmes de caméras dites de motion control. Il s'agit de dispositifs contrôlant la caméra et ses déplacements par l'intermédiaire d'un système informatique. Les mouvements ainsi programmés peuvent alors être répétés, modifiés et ajustés de manière extrêmement précise. La plus célèbre des caméras de motion control est celle conçue pour Star Wars par John Dykstra : La Dykstraflex. Lors de la réalisation d'un plan, la caméra se déplace autour de la maquette immobile ou du décor selon les coordonnées mémorisée par l'opérateur. Ces techniques sont toujours utilisées de nos jours (Star Wars : Episode III), mais une nouvelle technique est apparue. Un système enregistre les mouvements de la caméra lors du plan tourné avec les acteurs (live-action), puis les coordonnées issues de cet enregistrement sont utilisées pour guider le mouvement de la caméra virtuelle dans un logiciel d'animation 3D. Il devient alors possible de "cloner" le mouvement de la caméra réelle.
