Les Églises des trois conciles sont qualifiées de miaphysiques car elles suivent ce que disait Cyrille à propos de la nature du Christ.

Celui-ci soutenait que les deux natures (humaine et divine) coexistent sans qu’il y ait égalité entre elles : « unique nature incarnée (mia physis) du Verbe de Dieu sans mélange et sans confusion ». La nature est divine, l’adjectif « incarné » désigne l’Humanité que le Verbe Divin a fait sienne. On ne peut donc pas parler de monophysisme, cette dernière doctrine niant toute partie humaine dans la nature du Christ.
