Madhhab
Le mot madhhab ou mazhab (arabe : مذهب [maḏhab], pluriel :. مذاهب [maḏâhib], conception ; croyance ; école juridique musulmane) évoque en arabe une voie suivie dans l'interprétation des sources traditionnelles (Coran et hadith). Ce terme se réfère donc au fiqh, la jurisprudence musulmane.
Écoles
Disparues ou marginalisées
Plusieurs écoles sunnites anciennes ont disparu ou été marginalisées :
- l'école de La Mecque (notamment ʿAṭaʾ ibn Abî Rabâḥ)
- l'école de Damas (connue comme celle d'Awzâʿî –157h.)
- l'école de Sufyân Ath-Thawriy (–161 de l'hégire), d'Abû Thawr 854)
- Abû Jaʿfar aṭ-Ṭabarî (connue comme Jaririya)
- de Dâwûd Azh-Zhâhiriy (–157 = IXe siècle[Quoi ?]). La madhhab de ce dernier, dite zâhirite a été revivifiée par Ibn Hazm au XIe siècle dans al-Andalus, avant de disparaître à son tour.
Il en va de même du motazilisme, contre lequel s'est formé le courant ayant engendré le sunnisme.
Histoire récente
Le 6 juillet 1959, Mahmoud Chaltout, recteur de la mosquée al-Azhar du Caire délivre une fatwa historique reconnaissant le jafarisme (ja`fari) comme un madhhab, une école juridique musulmane qui est religieusement correcte à suivre dans le culte, comme peuvent l'être d'autres écoles de jurisprudence sunnites. Par la suite, l'institut d'Al-Azhar prendra ses distances avec cette décision, tout comme la majorité des sunnites.
