Annuit Cœptis est une des deux devises (l'autre étant Novus Ordo Seclorum) du Grand sceau des États-Unis d'Amérique figurant depuis 1935, au verso du dollar américain. Provenant du latin annuo (approuver) et de cœpio (commencer, entreprendre), cela veut littéralement dire quelqu'un ou quelque chose « approuve les choses qui ont été commencées ».

Le secrétaire du Congrès, Charles Thomson, suggéra « Annuit Coeptis » lorsqu'il finalisa le design du Grand sceau des États-Unis en juin 1782.

L'Œil de la Providence figurant au sommet de la pyramide représente Dieu omniscient. Il peut faire penser aussi à l'œil Oudjat de la mythologie égyptienne, aussi appelé œil d'Horus. Plusieurs théories du complot, particulièrement sur Internet, y ont vu une trace de diverses influences occultes (maçonniques, magiques, sataniques, ploutocratiques, illuminati ou autres) dans la fondation des États-Unis. Toutes ces influences supposées sont démenties à la fois par les historiens et par le gouvernement des États-Unis[1].

Il fut suggéré originalement par Pierre-Eugène Ducimetière, le consultant et artiste (d'origine genevoise) du premier comité du Grand Sceau, établi au 4 juillet 1776, date de la Déclaration d'indépendance. Élaborée par Thomas Jefferson, cette déclaration était dirigée contre les pouvoirs, jugés exorbitants et arbitraires, du Royaume de Grande-Bretagne. S'ensuivit la Guerre d'indépendance des États-Unis et l'élaboration de la Constitution.

En 1789, George Washington est désigné premier président des États-Unis, la Constitution américaine entre en vigueur.
