Un Low frequency oscillator (LFO) est un oscillateur très basse fréquence, ce qui permet de faire des modulations de signal sans que la fréquence modulante soit audible (fréquence infrasonique).

Le signal de modulation est généralement appliqué à l'amplitude du signal modulé, créant un effet de "vibrato en amplitude" (instruments électroniques, vibraphone…). Lorsqu'il est appliqué à la fréquence du signal modulé on obtient un effet de "vibrato en fréquence" (instruments à cordes frottées par archet, guitare…): le L.F.O. est alors constitué par l'appui oscillant du doigt sur la touche ou par une pression oscillante sur la poignée (scie musicale…).

Des considérations physiques (facture instrumentale) et de physiologie de l'audition permettent de constater que ces L.F.O. ont toujours un effet sur les autres paramètres sonores (les timbres des sons d'origine électronique sont modulables par un L.F.O.).
