Loren Cunningham (né en 1936 à Taft, Californie) a fondé Jeunesse en Mission (JEM) avec sa femme Darlene aux États-Unis en 1960 à l'âge de 24 ans. Son but est d'aider les jeunes à s'engager dans le travail missionnaire, il a été un des pionniers dans l'engagement à court terme.
Il a rapporté qu'il avait décidé de commencer Jeunesse en Mission en réponse à une vision de Dieu dans laquelle il a vu des vagues. Ces vagues devenaient de plus en plus grandes jusqu'à qu'elles couvrent la terre entière. Il a eu la conviction que ces vagues représentent des jeunes gens.
