Leighton O'Brien est un joueur de soccer (football) américain jouant à la position de milieu de terrain pour l’Impact de Montréal. Il est né le 14 mars 1976 à Tacoma (Washington).

Carrière

O'Brien a joué au niveau universitaire pour la University of San Diego. Au repêchage des joueurs universitaires de 1999, il a été repêché par le New England Revolution, mais a été libéré par cette équipe en mars 1999 et a été réclamé par le San José Clash. Il a peu joué avec le Clash, et a été libéré à la fin de la saison.

Le 30 avril 2001, il s'est joint aux Seattle Sounders avec lesquels il restera pendant une bonne partie des huit années suivantes. Ses quelques séjours hors de Seattle comprennent un prêt au club de deuxième division suédois Bodens BK en 2003 et 2004, et un court séjour avec le Real Salt Lake de la MLS en 2005. Il a aussi joué en soccer intérieur dans la Major Indoor Soccer League.

Parmi les honneurs remportés à Seattle il faut noter deux championnats (2005 et 2007), le titre du joueur le plus utile en 2002 et membre de la première équipes d'étoiles en 2001 et 2002[1].

Lors du passage des Sounders à la MLS en 2009, O'Brien a tenté en vain de se tailler une place dans la nouvelle franchise[2]. Il s'est alors dirigé vers le Tacoma Tide de la Premier Development League avant de signer le 7 août un contrat avec l'Impact de Montréal, où il rejoignait son jeune frère Ciaran[3].

Son père Fran O'Brien a joué pour l'équipe nationale irlandaise et son frère Ciaran O'Brien joue également pour l'Impact
