Répartition des peuples germaniques au Ier siècle ap. J.-C.

Peuple germanique de la mer du Nord localisé aux premiers siècles de l'ère chrétienne dans la partie méridionale de la péninsule du Jutland au Danemark, à laquelle ils ont donné leur nom.

À partir du milieu du Ve siècle, certains d’entre eux s’enrôlent comme mercenaires au service des chefs bretons de (Grande-)Bretagne. Ils s’installent surtout dans le Kent, où selon la tradition, leurs chefs les frères Hengist et Horsa, d’abord au service du roi breton Vortigern, se révoltent et fondent un royaume englobant également l’île de Wight[1], peuplé de Jutes. Leur capitale est l'actuelle Cantorbéry. Ils sont touchés par le Christianisme dès la fin du VIe siècle avec la conversion en 597 de leur roi Æthelbert (mort vers 616/8). Certains d'entre eux se seraient aussi installés dans le Boulonnais durant la même période tel que révélé par la toponymie et les fouilles archéologiques.

Les Jutes restés au Jutland se confondent ensuite avec les Danois, dans la mouvance des Vikings.

Les Jutes du Kent sont assez vite absorbés par leurs voisins saxons et frisons, probablement plus nombreux, et ils cessent de former un peuple distinct après le milieu du VIIe siècle.
