C'est à l'origine un mot provençal emprunté du latin juratus, "qui a prêté serment".
Un jurat est, dans certaines villes en particulier du sud de la France ou en Espagne, un magistrat municipal ayant prêté serment. Ainsi à Bordeaux dès 1206, la ville se dote d'institutions municipales, on parle des jurats de Bordeaux (ce sont les Consuls ou Échevins des autres communes). Les jurats élisent un maire, Michel de Montaigne est certainement le plus célèbre d'entre eux[1].
C'est aussi un nom parfois donné aux administrateurs élus d'une corporation ou d'un corps de métier, on emploie aussi le mot "juré".
