Alphonso Johnson est né le 2 février 1951 à Philadelphie, c'est un bassiste américain, qui a notamment joué avec le Weather Report.

Avant de rejoindre le Weather, il joue avec Catalyst, un groupe de Philadelphie qui mêle funk et jazz et présage le jazz fusion. Avant leur deuxième album, en 1971, il rejoint le Weather Report. Il joue alors de la basse sur les albums Mysterious Traveller, Tale Spinnin' et Black Market. Dans ce dernier, un jeune bassiste fait sa première apparition au sein de Weather Report, Jaco Pastorius.

Al Johnson a également enregistré trois albums en solo entre 1976 et 1977. Son jeu extrêmement complet en a fait un sideman très actif tout au long des années qui ont suivi son départ de Weather Report avec notamment Billy Cobham & George Duke Band (1976), Carlos Santana de 1983 à 1988, Wayne Shorter en 1988 ou encore Jazz Is Dead entre 1998 et 2001.
