John Pope (16 mars 1822 - 23 septembre 1892) fut un officier de carrière dans l'United States Army et général de l'Armée de l'Union durant la Guerre de Sécession.
John Pope est nommé dans l'ouest, à la tête de l’armée du Mississippi (unioniste) le 23 février 1862. Il conquiert New Madrid par une marche-surprise, remporte la bataille d'Island Number Ten, est vainqueur lors du siège de Corinth
Pope est alors rappelé dans l'est pour prendre la tête de l'armée de Virginie (unioniste). Sa mission consiste à rejoindre les restes de l'Armée du Potomac de George McClellan (qui a été repoussée par les confédérés jusqu'à la mer) et à ré-investir la capitale confédérée, Richmond. Mais il est gravement défait lors de la seconde bataille de Bull Run.
