James White (7 avril 1928 - 23 août 1999) est un auteur de science-fiction britannique (d'Irlande du Nord). Bien qu'assez réputé dans le milieu de la science fiction anglo-saxonne, seuls deux de ses livres ont été publiés en français.

L'Hôpital des Étoiles et Chirurgien galactique appartiennent à sa série la plus connue, Sector General. Ils racontent des aventures médicales dans un hopital spatial, où se croisent des races extra-terrestres de toutes formes et constitutions. Traités de manière humoristique, un peu à la manière d'un Jack Vance, ces romans ne bénéficient pas de la même aura dans notre langue.

Les deux titres disponibles en français sont des recueils de nouvelles. La série contient également des romans, dont le dernier a été publié en 1999 à titre posthume. L'Hôpital des Étoiles est considéré comme l'un des premiers space operas.
