All-over

Le all-over est un terme de peinture apparu vers 1948. Chaque coup de pinceau annule le précédent et le rapport de celui-ci avec la surface du fond. Cette technique a été inventée par Janet Sobel (1894–1968), peintre américaine d'origine ukrainienne. Jackson Pollock a vu son travail en 1944 à la galerie Art of This Century et s'en est inspiré pour créer ses drippings en 1945[1]. Comme sa manière est de peindre une toile étendue sur le sol, il ne pouvait jamais voir la composition de façon globale. Par conséquent, la seule façon pour lui de rendre cette dernière de façon unitaire est de répandre de la peinture partout de manière égale. Dans son cas, il utilisait des bâtonnets et de la peinture industrielle. Il la répartissait par des gestes amples, mais contrôlés. Le résultat est une pure abstraction dans l'espace pictural.

Procédé qui conduit à une répartition plus ou moins uniforme des éléments picturaux sur la totalité de la surface du tableau qui semble se prolonger au-delà des bords, éliminant ainsi le problème du champ.

Il existe plusieurs types de all-over :

Au Québec et au Canada, on associe l'artiste, signataire du Refus Global, Marcel Barbeau comme premier peintre ayant pratiqué la technique du all-over.
