Horatio Alger (13 janvier 1832-18 juillet 1899) est un écrivain américain.

Romancier prolifique, il est l'auteur de 119 livres exaltant le goût de la réussite. À une époque où l'entrepreneur est érigé en modèle par l'ensemble de la société américaine, Horatio Alger met en scène le self made man dans des ouvrages aux titres significatifs : Fame and Fortune (La Gloire et la Fortune), Only an Irish Boy (Un simple petit Irlandais), The Telegraph Boy (Le Petit Télégraphiste).

Ces contes de fées personnels ont pour fondement une morale édifiante : il faut travailler dur, vivre avec frugalité, ne pas fumer ni boire, se lever tôt, se coucher tard, la vertu conduisant des haillons aux richesses.
