Harold Arlen était un compositeur américain, né le 15 février 1905 à Buffalo, dans l'État de New York, et décédé le 23 avril 1986 à New York à l'âge de 81 ans. Il fut l'un des compositeurs importants du XXe siècle avec plus de 400 chansons dont certaines ont fait le tour du monde. Sa chanson de 1938, Over The Rainbow, extraite de la comédie musicale Le Magicien d'Oz, a été votée par la RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) la 20ème chanson américaine la plus importante. Ses compositions sont devenues des standards de jazz grâce à sa facilité à intégrer des éléments de blues dans le répertoire du Great American Songbook.
