Albion est l'ancien nom de la Grande-Bretagne.

En 730, Bède le Vénérable ouvre ainsi son Histoire ecclésiastique du peuple anglais : « La Bretagne est une île de l'Océan qui autrefois se nommait Albion[1] »..

Aujourd'hui, Albion est devenu le nom alternatif à connotation poétique de la Grande-Bretagne ou de l'Angleterre. C'est une hellénisation renaissante du nom antique de la Grande-Bretagne, Alba. Ce nom d'Alba désigne toujours (en Irlande, en Bretagne, en Galles) le tiers nord de l'île (c'est-à-dire l'Écosse), et sa signification, en passant à la forme « Albion », a été étendue à l'ensemble de l'île.

Albion est le dieu tutélaire original de la Grande-Bretagne. C'est un Géant, fils de Poseidon et frère d'Atlas. Il a aidé Atlas et Iberius (dieu de l'Irlande) à barrer à Hercule l'accès à l'Occident[2].
