Jean-Baptiste Morgagni, en italien, Giovanni Battista Morgagni, (Forlì 1682 - Padoue 1771), est un médecin italien du XVIIIe siècle, considéré comme l'initiateur de l'anatomo-pathologie moderne. Il a accompli au cours de sa vie près de 700 autopsies.

Travail et recherches

Giovanni Battista Morgagni développa encore la recherche menée en France par Vieussens. Dans un Monde où, bon nombre des maladies cardio-vasculaire sont encore méconnues, et par conséquent se terminent toujours par la mort du patient, Morgagni déclara à Padoue, que l'examen anatomique post-mortem (autopsie), n'aboutirait à rien si un examen clinique n'était pas pratiqué sur le patient encore vivant.

Il est ainsi l'un des premiers médecin à recueuillir le maximum d'informations chez ses patients (plaintes, mode de vie, possibles atteintes au travail, antécédants...

Il passa donc sa vie à interroger des patients et disséquer plus de 700 cadavres, ammassant ainsi une quantité importante de données cliniques, et anatomiques.

Jean-Baptiste Morgagni a notamment écrit De Sedibus et causis morborum per anatomem indagatis ("Recherches anatomiques sur le siège et les causes des maladies") originalement en latin, qui devant son succès a été réimprimé plusieurs fois et traduit en français (1765), anglais (1769) et allemand (1771).
