Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit (24 mai 1686 à Dantzig, aujourd'hui Gdańsk en Pologne16 septembre 1736 à La Haye aux Pays-Bas), est un physicien allemand à l'origine de l'échelle de température qui porte son nom.

Il se fixa en Hollande, et se lia à Leyde avec Willem Jacob 's Gravesande. Inventeur de l'aréomètre et du thermomètre à mercure (en 1714) qui portent son nom, celui-ci est divisé en 212 degrés. Les deux points extrêmes représentent la chaleur de l'eau bouillante et le froid intense produit par un mélange de neige et de sel ammoniac : le 0 du thermomètre centigrade correspond au 32e degré de celui de Fahrenheit. Fahrenheit a aussi inventé un hygromètre amélioré.

Le degré Fahrenheit

Le degré Fahrenheit construisit des thermomètres précis qui furent largement utilisés en Europe avant l'implantation du Système International d'unités amenant le basculement vers la mesure en degré Celsius. On utilise encore cette échelle de température de nos jours en Amérique du Nord et en Jamaïque.

Ses premiers thermomètres étaient remplis d'éthanol, mais il constata de meilleurs résultats avec du mercure. Il fixa à 0 °F la température la plus basse qu'il pouvait mesurer en laboratoire à l'aide d'un mélange d'eau, de sel et de glace, et à 100 °F celle d'un cheval sain.
