Freak Out! est le premier album du groupe The Mothers of Invention mené par Frank Zappa. Enregistré de novembre 1965 à janvier 1966, il sort en août 1966 en France. Il est produit par Tom Wilson pour MGM-Verve.

Selon Paul McCartney, il n'y aurait jamais eu de Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band si les Mothers n'avaient pas enregistré cet album.
Sorti en juillet 1966, il s'agit du 2e double album de l'histoire du rock (le 1er étant Blonde on Blonde de Bob Dylan sorti en mai 1966)

Tous les morceaux ont été composés et arrangés par Frank Zappa. On y retrouve les trois piliers qui sous-tendront toute son œuvre future : la rigueur de l'écriture musicale, un commentaire social sans fioriture et une bonne dose d'humour. Toute une face est consacrée à une pièce pour un ensemble de percussions (The Return of the Son of Monster Magnet), hommage au compositeur Edgar Varèse (disparu en novembre 1965) qui a très fortement influencé Zappa.

Sur tout l'album Zappa ne chante que sur 5 morceaux, Ray Collins chantant sur le reste.

En cadeau sur la pochette une carte certifiant la qualité de « FREAK » pour son détenteur.
