Francis « Fran » Asbury Tarkenton, né le 3 février 1940 à Richmond (Virginie), est un ancien joueur de football américain ayant évolué comme quarterback.

Il étudia à l'Université de Géorgie, jouant au football américain dans les Georgia Bulldogs.

Fran Tarkenton fut drafté en 1961 à la 29^e place (troisième tour) par les Vikings du Minnesota. Il reste dans la franchise jusqu'en 1966 avant de faire quatre saisons, de 1967 à 1971, dans les Giants de New York. En 1972, il revient à Minnesota pour finir sa carrière en 1978. Il sera professionnel pendant dix-huit saisons.

La saison NFL 1975, sa meilleure année, il reçoit le National Football League Most Valuable Player Award et le Bert Bell Award.

Son numéro 10 a été retiré dans la franchise des Vikings.

Il fut sélectionné neuf fois au Pro Bowl (1964, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1974, 1975 et 1976) et six fois en All-Pro (1970, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975 et 1976).

Il a intégré le Pro Football Hall of Fame en 1986 et le College Football Hall of Fame en 1987.

Après l'arrêt de sa carrière, il apparaîtra dans des shows télévisés et travaillera dans une entreprise informatique.
