L'affection (du latin "affectio" singifiant « rapport », « relation », « influence » ; "de afficere", "de ad" signifiant "faire quelque chose à"[1]) implique souvent une émotion associée à un sentiment ou type d'amour. Elle a provoqué un nombre de sentiments dans la philosophie et la psychologie concernant : l'émotion (populairement: l'amour, la dévotion etc.); la maladie; l'influence et l'état d'âme (psychologie)[2]. L'affection est populairement utilisé pour dénoter un sentiment ou un type d'amour, incluant plus que le bien-être ou l'amitié. Un individu manifestant de l'affection est dit affectueux.

Psychologie
Dans la psychologie, les termes affection et affectif sont de grande importance. Comme tous les phénomènes intellectuels ont été classés en tant que sensations par des scientifiques, toute émotion est perçue en tant que simple affection mentale, l'élément par lequel toutes les manifestations émotionnelles sont grandement prononcées.
Le psychologue américain Henry Murray (1893–1988) a développé une théorie de personnalité organisée en termes de motivations et de besoins. D'après Murray, ces besoins psychogéniques fonctionnent majoritairement par l'inconscience, mais joue un rôle majeur dans toute personnalité des individus. Murray classifie ces cinq besoins d'affection :
- Affiliation : Passer du temps avec d'autres individus
- Protection: Prendre soin d'une autre personne
- Jeu: S'amuser avec les autres
- Rejet social: Rejet d'autres individus
- Attention : Être utile ou protecteur auprès des autres
