Edward Higgins White II (alias Ed White) est un astronaute américain né le 14 novembre 1930 et décédé le 27 janvier 1967.

Missions réalisées

Ed White ne réalisa qu'un seul vol, à bord de la capsule Gemini 4, en compagnie de James McDivitt. Il rentra cependant dans l'histoire comme étant le premier américain à avoir réalisé une sortie extravéhiculaire lors de cette mission, le 3 juin 1965, moins de trois mois après celle du soviétique Alexei Leonov.

L'histoire retiendra également de lui qu'il fut l'un des trois astronautes d'Apollo 1, qui moururent dans l'incendie de leur capsule lors d'un entraînement au sol.

Ed White a été inhumé à West Point.

Divers

Sa mémoire fut honorée par l'astronaute David Scott, qui déposa une plaque commémorative sur la lune, ainsi que par l'attribution de son nom à une formation martienne.
