Contemporary

Contemporary est une compagnie de disques californienne fondée à la fin des années 1940 par Lester Koenig.

Au début des années 50, Contemporary publie les séances dirigées par Howard Rumsey au "Lighthouse" d' Hermosa Beach. Le label va publier les enregistrements des principaux acteurs du Jazz West Coast. En premier lieu, ceux de Shelly Manne qui se lie à la compagnie par un contrat à long terme. Koenig s'associe au photographe William Claxton pour l'illustration de ses disques. Il n'hésite pas à publier les expérimentations les plus originales du mouvement West Coast. A la fin des années 1950, le label publiera les premiers disques d' Ornette Coleman.

Les années 1960 sont plus difficiles pour les activités de la compagnie. Koenig ne produira plus qu' un ou deux disques par an de 1963 à 1975. Un regain d'intérêt se produit alors pour le Jazz et la compagnie enregistre de nombreux musiciens dont les anciens Art Pepper et Hampton Hawes. En 1977, le fondateur Lester Koenig meurt. Quelques années plus tard, la compagnie passe sous le contrôle de Fantasy.

Le catalogue de Contemporary est constitué de quelque 150 albums qui représentent une part importante de l'histoire du Jazz.
