9 mm court

Le 9 mm court est un calibre de cartouche aussi nommé .380 ACP. Sa désignation métrique est 9 x 17 mm

Dans la longue série des calibres conçus par John M. Browning vers 1910, le 9 mm court est l’un des plus polyvalents. Bien que de puissance nettement supérieure au 7,65 Browning, cette munition est mise en œuvre par des pistolets automatiques de catégorie comparable. Ainsi, le Walther PP et le Mauser Hsc auront des versions pour chacun de ces calibres sans que les carcasses et glissières soient modifiées. Parmi les nombreux fabricants de pistolets automatiques ayant mis sur le marché des armes chambrées dans ce calibre, citons le Beretta Cheetah,le LLAMA III-A, le Astra Constable et le CZ 83.

Le 9 mm court permet donc de conserver des armes compactes tout en ayant une puissance accrue. Si le 7,65 Browning est insuffisant pour les services de police, le 9 mm court répond, lui, à ce cahier des charges spécifique. De nombreuses forces armées européennes en ont aussi fait leur calibre d’armes de poing réglementaires, dont l’Italie et la Suède.

En résumé, cette cartouche est une alternative à la cartouche de 9 mm Parabellum qui nécessite généralement l’emploi d’armes nettement moins compactes et difficilement dissimulables. Il va sans dire que la majorité des fabricants de munitions dans le monde manufacture cette munition et offre un large éventail de chargements. Ce calibre est moins populaire en France où le 7,65 Browning lui est préféré.
