Le Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) est un examen international sanctionnant un haut niveau de maîtrise de la langue anglaise.

C'est le diplôme de plus haut niveau organisé par l'organisme Cambridge ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) dépendant de l'université de Cambridge (Angleterre). Il correspond au niveau C2 ou Maîtrise défini par le Cadre européen commun de référence pour les langues du Conseil de l'Europe et certifie un niveau d'anglais proche de celui d'une personne dont l'anglais est la langue maternelle. Il est reconnu mondialement dans les universités et les entreprises. Environ 45 000 personnes dans 80 pays passent le CPE chaque année.

Il est possible de préparer le CPE dans de nombreuses écoles de langue au Royaume-Uni ou à l'étranger. Beaucoup d'instituts de formation proposent un entrainement et des examens blancs dans le cadre d'un séjour linguistique. Comme pour les autres examens de Cambridge ESOL, une préparation spécifique est recommandée.

Déroulement

Le candidat doit s'inscrire dans l'un des centres d'examen plusieurs semaines avant la session. L'inscription coûte 209 € ( session avec le British Council).

Le test se déroule deux fois par année, en juin et décembre, et comprend 5 parties (Papers) :

  1. Reading (1 heure et demie) : compréhension écrite ;
  2. Writing (2 heures) : expression écrite ;
  3. Use of English (1 heure et demie) : grammaire ;
  4. Listening (40 minutes) : compréhension orale ;
  5. Speaking (19 minutes) : expression orale.

Chaque Paper a le même poids et compte pour 20 % dans l'évaluation totale. Seule l'évaluation totale est significative : aucune note partielle n'est éliminatoire. Le certificat est attribué aux candidats obtenant au moins 60 % du total des points.

Évaluation

L'examen donne lieu a une évaluation chiffrée traduite en cinq paliers (Grades) de A à E.

  • Grade A : le candidat obtient 80 points (marks) ou plus ;
  • Grade B : entre 75 et 79 marks ;
  • Grade C : entre 60 et 74 marks ;
  • Grade D : entre 55 et 59 marks ;
  • Grade E : résultat inférieur ou égal à 54 marks.

Les résultats inférieurs à C sanctionnent un échec.
