Carolee Schneemann est née le 12 octobre 1939 à Fox Chase en Pennsylvanie. Elle est une artiste plasticienne américaine connue pour son discours sur le corps, la sexualité et le genre. Son travail est principalement caractérisé par la recherche sur les traditions archaïques visuelles, les tabous, et le corps de l'artiste dans sa relation dynamique avec le corps social.
Ses œuvres ont été présentées à la Musée d'art contemporain de Los Angeles, le Museum of Modern Art de New York, et le London National Film Theatre.
Carolee Schneemann a enseigné dans de nombreuses institutions, dont la California Institute of the Arts, the Art Institute de Chicago, Hunter College et l'Université de Rutgers, où elle a été la première femme professeur d'art.
Artiste multidisciplinaire, elle a produit peintures, photographies, performances et installations, et également publié de nombreux articles.
Les œuvres de Carolee Schneemann sont associées à Fluxus, Neo-Dada, la Beat Generation et l'art corporel.
