William Henry Vanderbilt (8 mai 1821 à New Brunswick (New Jersey) – 8 décembre 1885 à New York) était un homme d'affaires américain et un membre de l'importante Famille Vanderbilt. Il était un des 13 enfants de Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877) surnommé le Commodore. A sa mort, il était l'homme le plus riche du monde.

Biographie

Enfance

William Vanderbilt naquit à New Brunswick, au New Jersey^[1] le 8 mai 1821. En 1841 il épousa Maria Louisa Kissam (1821–1896), fille d'un ministre presbytérien. En 1877, il hérita de son père, le "Commodore" Cornelius Vanderbilt magnat des chemins de fer, d'environ 100 millions de dollars. Lorsqu'il mourut à son tour 9 ans plus tard, cette somme atteignait 194 millions.

Décès

Il mourut le 8 décembre 1885 à New York City. Il fut inhumé dans le mausolée de la famille Vanderbilt au cimetière morave de New Dorp sur Staten Island, New York. Son capital fut partagé entre ses 8 enfants et sa femme ; une grosse part alla aux deux fils aînés William Kissam Vanderbilt et Cornelius Vanderbilt II.
